Texas ID card

Getting a Texas Identification Card

A Texas Driver License is the usual form of identification at government offices and businesses in Texas. If you do not have a Driver License, you need to get a Texas ID card. You will not be able to do business with a bank, write checks at stores, or cash checks from other people, unless you have a Texas Driver License or a Texas ID card.

How do I get a Texas ID card?

You may apply for a Texas ID at any
Driver License Office in Texas. There are seven Driver License offices in Houston, and most other cities also have offices.

When you go to the Driver License office, you need to bring a document that proves your identity. Any one of the following documents is acceptable:

  • U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services document with a photograph, or
  • U.S. passport, or
  • U.S. citizenship (naturalization) certificate with photograph, or
  • U.S. military ID card

(If you were born in the U.S., instead of the one of the above documents you may bring your birth certificate and two other supporting documents such as social security card, marriage license, school records, automobile title, or voter registration card.)

At the Driver License office you will need to pay a $15 fee. You will complete a Texas ID application form, and staff at the Driver License office will take your photograph for your ID card. You will receive your ID card in the mail a few weeks later.
